This paper presents an approach for mesh simplification of CAD mesh models based on hierarchical face clustering (HFC) by fitting primitives. We first improve a primitive fitting strategy which results in robust and higher quality primitive clusters comparing to conventional methods. We also present primitive fitting methods for cones and tori. Our method resolves some issues occurring in conventional HFC-based primitive fitting methods. We applied this result to mesh simplification for DMU based on constrained QEM mesh simplification method.
