Abstract
This paper shows the desired Project Based Learning (PBL) in design education from the viewpoint of an industrial partner. A mutually complementary relationship between academia and industrial partners will form various types of collaboration style. Among them, PBL enhances the function of knowledge operations in academia and transfer the advanced methodology of design engineering to partners effectively, as the most basic and open style. Fundamental industries which provide products and services with middle-level complexity are adequate for the PBL partners. Their contemporary problems will match current research issues in academia. Actual PBL experiences with Osaka University and Stanford University reveal distinguished feature of students' behavior between Japan and U.S.
