Abstract

This paper presents early modeling methodology evaluation results for a PhD project intending to create an integrated model framework relating societal modeling techniques to system-of-system architecture models and design. This framework uses matrix-based and systems dynamics models to relate product system functions to associated systems and to societal dynamics step-by-step, in order to synthesize a design philosophy for a new product. This framework will be applied to, and evaluated by a case study in the aerospace industry: a space system manufacturer is considering designing new product lines to expand its customer base in response to increasing consumer demand for satellite-based services in emerging markets. Valuing different, novel satellite product line architectures is a challenge.
