Recently, structural optimisations have been paid attention and widely researched. Among the structural optimisations, the topology optimisation is considered to be the most flexible method. In this study, we investigate the applicability of the boundary element method (BEM) to the topology optimisation. To accelerate the BEM, we employ the H-matrix method, which uses a low rank approximation to sub-blocks of the coefficient matrix of BEM. We show that the proposed H-matrix-based topology optimisation provides a reasonable optimal solution for a benchmark problem in 3D elastostatics.
