In the present competitive industrial environment, designers need to conceive creative and innovative design ideas. Utilizing information technologies (IT) including artificial intelligence (AI) to support and enhance designers’ intelligence and creativity should be a promise approach. If we understand types of innovative design ideations those can be derived by IT or AI and those need to be conceived by human designers, it would give us guidelines to form the best combination of human intelligence and IT for innovative design ideation support technology and system. As a method of obtaining such findings, we propose a concept of retrospective ideation analysis. In retrospective ideation analysis, we analyze which descriptions of an existing innovative product can be obtained from the available past, i.e., before the announcement or the launch of the product, information on the internet and which descriptions cannot. By applying retrospective ideation analysis to a wearable neck speaker as an example of existing innovative product, it is confirmed that some ideas can be derived from the past products by IT but some word like “shoulder” or “movie” should need to be conceived by human designers.
