Conventional crates used for product packaging were designed based on JIS standards and designer’s experience. The actual compression strength of the crate tended to be stronger than calculated one, which resulted surplus wood consumption for the crate. This paper shows an appropriate strength calculation method at the design stage in order to make wood usage with optimization for the desired strength. Each components of the crate are jointed with nails so that the nail and wood behave complex and plastical deformation when the load is applied to the crate. The rigidity of the nail connection added to the Node Element Method obtained by experiment allowed to calculate the strength with higher accuracy.
