Using a design structure matrix (DSM) to model three different automotive design and development processes, rework associated with development was formulated as a sum of geometric progression, and hypothetical schedule and cost risks were analyzed using a probabilistic Monte Carlo approach. The results showed that the schedule and cost risks could be reduced by a process that reduces rework. The study also identified issues with this method, including correction of risk values, reproducibility of DSM creation, obtaining cost tables, and setting acceptable risk.
