Recently, “what to create” is becoming more important in design than “how to build”. In order to create innovative product and services, ideas for new functions and user experience should be generated from the early design stage. Effective methodologies for supporting design ideation using information technology (IT), however, have not been established. This study aims to obtain effective information for design ideation, such as trends in functions and user experiences, and design strategies applicable to new products and services, through differential analysis of functions and user experiences of existing products and services using language information processing. As a specific approach, a set of sentences of product descriptions obtained from e-commerce sites by web scraping were converted into a set of bag-of-words, and the differences in functions and user experiences were analyzed based on the meaning similarity and IDF. From the results, we verified the effectiveness and potential of the proposed method and discussed issues to be solved.
