Abstract

On the basis of mathematical functions or numerical algorithms, we can generate various geometrical shapes in terms of a relatively limited number of parameters. This is the basic idea of so-called algorithmic design. In the current study, a general formulation of the approach is proposed. We introduce an idea of shaping function that is formally independent of specific designs. The proposed approach is considered to have the generality to be applicable to structure design problems of different types. An optimal design approach based on the shaping function is also proposed. Example designs of truss structure are conduncted; the feasibility and applicability of the proposed approach are discussed.
