After the accident of Tokyo Electric Power Daiichi Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011, dependence on the coal-fired power plant has been rising in Japan. On the other hand, the fuel unit price for coal has been low due to the high amount of CO2 emission. Because of this, co-firing of woody biomass to coal firepower has been considered as the counter-measure. This paper focused on the biomass fuel torrefaction manufacturing process that can achieve over 30% of co-firing fraction in a coal firing power plant. Also, the paper discussed the LCCO2 of a system where the heat waste of pyrolysis process was utilized. The CO2 emission of the entire system including raw material production, transportation, and co-firing was calculated and compared with chip and pellet. As a result, CO2 reduction was achieved and the in the case where 30% of torrefied material was used in coal co-firing power plant, 95,000 t of-CO2/Y could be avoided for 50MW power generation compared to using 100% coal.
