Abstract
In this study we propose a fast calculation technique of exp(-x^2) for particle-grid interactions in Vortex in Cell method. This technique is based on the incremental computation which is proposed by Turkowski for the Gaussian blur filtering on the image processing. The incremental computation can reduce the number of exp(-x^2) calculation times by replacing expf(-x^2) with 2 times multiplications. The incremental computation is implemented in Vortex in Cell method to simulate the plane mixing layer, and the performance, based on computational time,is evaluated. As a result, the computational time of particle-grid interactions becomes roughly five times shorter. The performance evaluation and simulation results of the plane mixing layer demonstrate the applicability of the incremental computation to calculate exp(-x^2) for particle-grid interactions in Vortex in Cell method.
