The objective of the present study is to develop a novel microactuator by using a liquid crystal.As a fundamental experiment,we tried to move a liquid crystal droplet(4-cyano-4'n-pentylbiphenyl) put on a flat glass plate.A transparent electrode layer(ITO layer) was formed on the glass plate The ITO layer was divided into two parts.The surface of the ITO layer was coated with an alignment layer,which helps align the liquid crystal molecules.The applied voltage V was 70 - 100 V,and the width of the isolated section H was 10-20 μm.The application of an electric field moved a liquid crystal droplet by 14μm when V=100 V and H= 15 μm.
