Abstract
In the Fitness for service (FFS) code, the evaluation procedure of the allowable depth for an embedded flaw from that of a surface flaw which has been decided from nondestructive testing is necessary. In this paper, the re-characterization procedure of an embedded flaw was derived by equating the stress intensity factor of an embedded flaw with that of a surface flaw. In addition, the condition that an embedded flaw is considered to be a surface flaw because of ligament plastic breakthrough was clarified. This proposed condition was compared with that of JSME and ASME code.
