Abstract
This paper discusses reaction mechanism during fabrication of C/C-HfC-SiC composite. The C/C-HfC-SiC composite was fabricated by the melt infiltration of HfSi_2 in to porous C/C composite at temperatures between 1600℃ and 2000℃. In order to investigate the reaction mechanism between HfSi_2 and carbon, C/C and graphite specimens were used as substrates. Cross-sectional observations revealed that at the beginning of reaction, HfC and SiC were formed on the substrates. The SiC was further reacted with HfSi_2 to form HfC with the increase in processing temperature.
