In Japan, there are many topographical ridges and houses with steps. The presence of undulations and steps
hinders the progress of the wheelchair, causing the wheelchair to retract and causing a fall accident. Therefore,
wheelchairs for the elderly and the physically handicapped are required to have a function of preventing reverse
movement to prevent a fall accident. In this study the reverse motion preventing gear mechanism is presented for
the wheelchair. We also focused on the self-locking gear layout that prevents the gear mechanism from reversing.
In addition, experiments were conducted to confirm the effectiveness of present method and it was confirmed that this mechanism could be mounted on a wheelchair to actually prevent backward movement.
