The construction of the first building applied SC structure fully (full-SC), which is indispensable to achieve shortened construction period (21.5 months from the first concrete work to fuel loading), has been started since August 2002 in Japan. The design of this building was carried out according to SC design guideline. It was reviewed based on Japanese Building Cord revised in May 2000,and the construction was permitted. Before the construction starting, a mock up test with some real size SC panels was carried out to confirm the SC modular construction method. The outline of the design and the construction, the results of the mock up test are reported. (1) Overview of the first full-SC building The building includes the equipments for incinerating radioactive wastes in NPP. Its size is about 22m×28m wide, 18m high. This is the first building applied the full-SC system in the world. (2) Design of SC building The SC panels were designed with thin, 4.5mm, steel plates. The limit strength of this building against earthquake loading was calculated based on our SC design guideline and confirmed to be sufficiently strong to the strength required by Building Cord. The coordination of the design between structures and equipments, which is very important in SC design, were efficiently achieved by utilizing 3-D CAD systems. (3) Mock up test In a factory, 10 pieces of actual size wall panels and 2 floor panels were manufactured and integrated in one piece as a mock up test structure at a site. In a fabrication factory, the precisions of SC panels and the details of assembling equipment articles and pipes were confirmed. On a field, the workability, the accuracy of setting steel panels, the quality of welded joints, and the finishing precisions after pouring concrete were investigated. (4) Construction of SC building SC modular panel size was determined to be suitable for manufacturing and transporting. According to a crane capacity, the optimal plan of electing SC blocks jointed with a few modular panels at the construction yard was discussed. By means of these SC modular construction methods, the construction period could be reduced a lot.
