The accurate control rod position measurement is crucial to ensure the reactor safety and reliability. However, measurement resolution of the current electrically-induced rod position sensors are limited by the number of coils used and their equal distances. In the work, a new capacitance sensor is employed to monitor the behavior of the Torlon 4203 (T4203) material control rod guide rod. Based on the variations of equivalent electrical permittivity with different control rod positions in 200 MW nuclear heating reactor (NHR-200), a sensor system with T4203 material is applied to measure the rod position. Furthermore, the capacitance variation trends obtained by the electric theoretical model and numerical model were compared with the experimental results so as to validate the proposed model. The subsequent quantitative analyses on the data indicate the reliability and accuracy of the apparatus for monitoring rod position. It is demonstrated that such a system shows favorable applications for the position measurements in NHR-200.
