In 2019 KIT conducted the latest quench test (QUENCH-20 test) which was equipped with a BWR fuel bundle to investigate the hydrogen source and B4C reactions during severe accident conditions. Currently, LEI is modeling the QUENCH-20 test by using severe accident code RELAP/SCDAPSIM and providing parametric analysis as part of the framework of IAEA-CRP “Advancing the State-of-Practice in Uncertainty and Sensitivity Methodologies for Severe Accident Analysis in Water Cooled Reactors”.

The numerical modeling of QUENCH-20 is very challenging, because of the asymmetric test configuration, also the difficulties to model the absorber blade. Hence, different modeling approaches have been used to adequately model the phenomena of hydrogen production and B4C eutectic reactions.
