Operating tests were carried out on a 10kW-class MCFC stack with a commercial size reactive area, which was fuelled by CO rich gas. Stable operating performance was observed under the conditions supplying a simulated coal gas. This fact proves that the commercial size MCFC could be applied to the IG/MCFC system. A fuel composed of the gas H_2/CO/CO_2/H_2O=0/45/5/50,i.e. a fuel gas without H_2,was supplied to the stack with a fuel utilisation of around 90%. The supplied CO gas changed into H_2 in the water-gas shift reaction and supported the electricity generation reaction. The increase of the stack temperature depends on the CO/(CO+H_2) ratio in the fuel gas. According to the measurement of the anode outlet gas composition using a gas-chromatography, the water-gas shift reaction is in equilibrium at the stack's operating temperature. A voltage decrease was not determined in the stack tests when fuelled by CO rich gas.
