CO2 capture is regarded as a prospective technology to reduce CO2 emission from various industries, and it is required to reduce the auxiliary load for CO2 capture to apply CO2 capture to thermal power stations practically. A high-efficiency oxy-fuel IGCC system is expected high net thermal efficiency of 42%HHV, namely as high as a state-of-the-art coal-fired power station, though it captures CO2. Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) executed a joint development project supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) with heavy industry manufacturers. The oxy-fuel IGCC system is mainly composed of an O2/CO2 blown gasifier and a semi-closed cycle gas turbine. CRIEPI executed several kinds of experimental research and numerical simulations and proved that its efficiency is expected to be more than 42%HHV. This report is about the consideration of additional thermal efficiency improvement by injecting steam into the coal gasifier as a gasifying agent. It was confirmed that steam injection into the coal gasifier as a gasifying agent could be a prospective choice to improve the net thermal efficiency of the oxy-fuel IGCC system more by arranging appropriate operating conditions.
