In the head positioning control design of hard disk drives (HDDs), holder has less limitation on its running frequency than sampler. Thus, so-called input multi-rate control has been widely used in order to improve the performance, and many algorithms have been proposed so far. However, all the methods assume zero order hold (ZOH) as a hold function although the hold function does not necessarily have to be ZOH. In this sense, the designed method with the use of the Generalized Hold Function (GHF) is quite attractive since it does not assume any conventional kind of hold function but yields a piecewise continuous function with jumps at measurement instance. In this paper, we studied the possible performance enhancement for track-following control of HDDs that can be attained with a GHF by conducting several simulations. Our results show that we can have some advantage in terms of the position accuracy in standard deviation compared to the conventional Η_∞-based controller.
