In various applications, gearboxes are subjected to downtimes with small amplitude vibrations or temporally changing loads. During these periods, fretting lines can occur on the tooth flanks. Fretting lines are oriented along the lines of contact and can show profile deviations. Within a research project [3], the formation conditions and mechanisms of fretting lines on case hardened cylindrical gears were investigated systematically. Based on the performed investigations, a model conception that describes the formation conditions was derived. Furthermore, first basic test runs on a FZG back-to-back gear test rig with gears showing severe fretting lines were performed. The test runs were carried out in order to investigate if fretting lines lead to characteristic features within the running time. Based on the test results, a corresponding model conception was derived. This model conception assumes that certain characteristics of fretting lines can be rated as tolerable. The paper will present the main results of the performed investigations and discuss the herein found correlations in detail.
