Improving gear mesh efficiency contributes to reducing the environmental impact of vehicles. The tooth lubrication state was improved in this study by greatly reducing tooth surface roughness and by adopting a low friction lubricant.
Tooth surface roughness was improved in the gear finishing process. Gear mesh efficiency was tested under several tooth surface roughness patterns or gear pair combinations. The experimental results showed that tooth mesh efficiency was improved by approximately 0.5% when the sum of tooth surface roughness Rz of the gear pair was reduced from 2.2μm to 1.3μm. When Rz was reduced from 2.2μm to 1.7μm, the improvement was approximately 0.3%.
Similar results were obtained in the analysis. The analysis method was described in the Transactions of the Japan Society Mechanical Engineering, under the title of “Estimation and Improvement Method of Mesh Efficiency of Cylindrical Gears”. Therefore, it was confirmed that the mesh efficiency calculation method is useful in a wide range of tooth surface roughness. Additionally, as a result of estimating the friction coefficient using the calculation method, it was confirmed that the friction coefficient obtained with Matic S, an automatic transmission lubricant, is lower than that obtained with a conventional lubricant.
