This paper investigated the influence of the elastic deformation of pins of metal chain belts on the critical torque TC and the transmitting efficiency η of continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). Some tentative specimens of chain belts with low stiff-pins were prepared of which cross sections of pins were reduced by grinding their center parts. It was shown that the transmitting efficiency η was affected by the compressive stiffness of the pins although the critical torque TC was not significantly influenced by that. The belt penetration into radial direction was increased when the compressive deformation of pins were remarkable on the chain belt with low stiff-pins. This study found that the transmitting efficiency η was decreased by the reduction of the compressive stiffness of the pins because the belt penetration was increased. The torque loss of the metal chain belt type CVTs was also theoretically calculated with simple equations when the compressive stiffness of the pins was changed, and calculation results agreed with experimental results. This study suggested that the transmitting efficiency of CVTs with a metal chain belt should be further improved by preventing the lateral deformation of a chain belt.
