Powder sintered high speed steels-ASP30 are widely used as intermittent cutting tools. Poor grindability of the material due to presence of harder vanadium carbides in the metal matrix needs enough attention to be paid during finish grinding of such cutting tools. Failure of which, results in occurrence of grinding burn - a frequently referred grinding defect. Burn in cutting wedge will have direct influence over the cutting tool life/performance. Monitoring of grinding burn and prediction of its influence over tool life is an important production aspect. Present work involves in prediction of grinding burn in ASP30 HSS using on-line integrated sensing techniques and its role on tool life.
