Abstract
Aluminum-Magnesium (Al-Mg) alloys powders were sintered using spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The electrical resistivity and tensile strength of alloys powders compacts were measured. The microstructure at the interface between powder particles was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. The results showed that the electrical resistivity of Al-Mg alloys powders compacts decreased and the tensile strength increased with an increasing in the amounts of Mg addition, which was attributed to reduction reaction of Mg with oxide film. The oxide layer in the interface was amorphous alumina for pure Al powder compact, and there were the precipitates in the interface for the alloys powders compacts with Mg addition. The amounts of the precipitates increased, and the compositions of the precipitates change from MgAl_2O_4 to MgO with an increase in amounts of Mg addition from 0.3 to 10 mass% in the alloys powders.
