The deformation-induced evolution of orientation and alignment of molecular chains can physically explain characteristic feature of the macroscopic deformation behavior of polymeric materials. In this study, macro- and microscopic deformation behavior of polycarbonate (PC) under simple shearing was observed using atomic force microscope (AFM). Macroscopic principal stretch direction was measured using deformation of lattice pattern marked on the specimen surface, and orientation of microfibril alignment was measured using AFM. At around the shear-band wave front, hierarchical microalignment of the surface structure with different orientation was observed which is characteristic deformation behavior under simple shearing with shear-band propagation.
