Abstract
Bearing tests were carried out under various loading conditions for bearing steel SUJ2, and the morphology of flaking failures caused by rolling contact fatigue were investigated by cross-sectional observation. It was found that the depth of flaking failure tended to be smaller than that was estimated by the conventional method based on the maximum shearing stress. A new method to estimate the depth of flaking failure based on stress intensity factor K_<II> of subsurface crack was proposed in this paper. It was confirmed that the depth estimated by this method was closer to the actual depth than estimated by conventional method.
