抄録

Basic subjects and recent progress of the transition of laminar flows and the change to chaos and then turbulence are explained in an elementary way. First, fundamental solutions are introduced as the backbone of the theoretical study. Then some important classes of bifurcation diagram in the study of the transition of fluid flows are elucidated with the emphasis on the fact that the bifurcation study is now a basic tool of this area of research Next some examples of the transition and chaos of fluid flows are explained. Lorenz model is the most fundamental one because of not only a historical reason but its importance in the recent study of the transition phenomena Transition of some duct flows are explained as the most important cases for the fluids engineering, such as the plane Couette and Poiseuille flows, the Hagen-Poiseuille flow and the curve duct flows, from the viewpoint of bifurcation diagram and chaotic movement in the phase space.
