Abstract

A new methodology is suggested to obtain R-curve for mode II interlaminar fracture toughness in CFRP laminates without conducting well-known stabilized ENF tests. Fibre discontinuities are dispersed in UD-CFRP laminate composite and its fracture stress is obtained by tensile loading. The fracture stress is related to interlaminar crack growth from fibre discontinuities then calculation is carried out by an analytical model to yield critical energy release rate GC during the crack growth. The R-curve can be formed by plotting GC with different intervals between dispersed fibre discontinuities, and is validated by comparing with ENF results for 0/0 interface.
