A numerical simulation model was applied to analyze the interaction between short crack propagation and wear. The crack was assumed to initiate when the total accumulated plastic shear strain reached the critical value. The Hobson model was applied for the crack propagation. With regard to wear, the Archard model was adopted. The model was first applied to the results of twin disc fatigue tests and then to the situations in the railway wheel tread. The effect of rolling direction reversal on the crack propagation and wear was studied using the twin disc tests.
