Abstract

Bolted joints are widely used when constructing machines and structures. However, such troubles as self-loosening and fatigue failures have been reported as well. For ensuring the safety of mechanical structures, it is of critical importance to prevent the self-loosening. In this paper, focusing on the rotation loosening, the loosening process of bolted joint with/without washer under transverse loading is analyzed by three-dimensional finite element method, using helical thread models with accurate geometry. In the numerical analyses, systematic calculations are carried out to examine the effect of friction coefficient on the loosening phenomena.
