Abstract
This paper deals with the development of an automatic CNC tool grinding machine for high precision ball nose end mills. The 6 axes configuration of this machine was determined to optimize the number of CNC axis in order to avoid complicated simultaneous movement on the radius relief and to make the measurement of radius on the machine easier. The work chucking system consists of a shrinkage fit holder with a HSK shank which should be clumped into the work head directly. This feature, exceptionally tool mounting error of a holder with collet improves the tool accuracy of geometry and size. Ball nose end mills which should be ground are measured and are compensated to grind on the machine by using a touch sensor with electrical short-circuit mechanism and controlled CNC axes. As a result this machine can grind high precision ball nose end mills which accuracy of radius within ±2.5 microns.
