Abstract
This study proposes the method for measurement of the tool edge temperature in tapping. The tool edge temperature of tapping tool was measured using a two- color pyrometer with an optical fiber. In addition, the vibration caused by tool edge-work piece contact was sensed by an acceleration pickup. Used tools were TiN coated HSS-spiral tap and these sizes were M10×1.5. The temperature of tool edges and chips were able to be measured distinguishably. In tapping of BN free-machining steel, the maximum tool edge temperature reached about 300 ℃ at cutting speed 30 m/min.
