Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to measure the temperature variations on a machined surface at the bottom of a drilled hole during drilling. A newly developed infrared radiation pyrometer equipped with two optical fibers is used to measure the temperature. The effects of workpiece thickness, feed rate, and workpiece material on the machined surface temperature are investigated. The machined surface temperature increases gradually as drilling progresses, and increases rapidly near the bottom of the workpiece. This increase in temperature near the bottom surface of the workpiece causes rapid wear of the drill.
