Abstract
This paper describes a new in-process ultrasonic monitoring method for cutting process. In order to realize a flexible and reliable process monitoring an ultrasonic pulse transducer was installed into a cutting tool for turning process, and actual turning experiments with a conventional lathe were performed. Some characteristic parameters of obtained signal of received echo pulses were defined to monitor machining status. The obtained results through the actual cutting experiments confirm that the proposed ultrasonic monitoring method has a capability to monitor various machining status such as form of chip, tool wear, and chatter vibration.
