Abstract

This study elucidated experimentally that the additional torque component by chip evacuation accounted for a part of the total tapping torque. The torque components in tapping using a spiral tap were calculated on some assumptions. The chip formation torque derived from the effective shear angle, tool geometry and shear stress on shear plane estimated from the chip hardness. The additional torque components by edge force and friction force on flank face were examined. Comparing the sum of the calculated torque components with the measured torque, the additional torque component by chip evacuation was discussed.
