Abstract

In the ultraprecision cutting process with a single crystal diamond tool it is important to monitor the contact between the tool edge and the workpiece surface to make the machining process stable. However, it is difficult to apply electric conduction to diamond cutting because diamond crystal is an electric insulator. In this study, to realize high precision monitoring of contact of them a new monitoring method by using photoelectric effect has been proposed. The method employs ultraviolet to make the diamond crystal conductive. Some experimental results confirmed that the monitoring signal changes before the tool contact and includes information on approach of a cutting tool.
