The object of this work is to determine the allowable amount of sulphur in ordinary iron castings for machine construction mostly by means of mechanical and microscopic tests, and the results obtained are as follows : - for soft, iron (over 2% of Si.) permissible amount of sulphur is up to 0.12%, for hard iron (about 1.5% of Si.) up to 0.10% and for very hard iron (under 1.0% of Si.) up to 0.08%.
