The use of CVTs has been growing in Japan for the fuel economy. An example of CVTs is a traction drive CVT, which gives excellent drivability and low-noise performance. One of its issues is improvement of transmission efficiency. Gear tests were conducted under high speed and low load conditions using a gear tester installed with a pair of helical gears with small module for vehicle transmission. As results of six lubricant tests, the traction characteristics of lubricant base oils greatly affected gear efficiency and the influence of additives was found to be not so significant.
