Recently, a new application of face gear has been proposed for helicopter transmissions and this has led to revived interest. The geometrical design method of the face gear set with spur gear as pinion has been clarified. Well, it is necessary to use the helical gear for the pinion to change the shape of the contact line freely. The problem of where the pinion to locate in the gear space has already been solved by the mean contact point. In this paper, we describe a design method which recognizes the singularity of engagement. Specifically, the unique two lines on which the specific sliding becomes infinite were taken up as an index of design.
