In the Japanese manufacturing industry, the hollowing out of industry and mass retirement of skilled workers are having a serious effect on weakening technical capability. In order to continue the manufacturing of high added value products in the future, efficient skills transfer is indispensable. Virtual training can let the trainees experience unsafe condition without danger, show additional information, and other advantages. Therefore, we developed a virtual training system for lathe operation that can give trainees visual information about cutting conditions and feed speed. We conducted questionnaire surveys to evaluate the developed system. The results show that the chips are simulated well and the system allows trainees to judge cutting conditions through the additional information.
