This paper proposes an algorithm for improving the fuel consumption of the energy management of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). The society of automotive engineers of Japan (JSAE) and the society of instrument and control engineers (SICE) in Japan provide a benchmark model for fuel consumption of HEV. First, the algorithm managing the fuel consumption is constructed with four design variables. The computation is so costly that sequential approximate optimization (SAO) with radial basis function (RBF) network is used to find an optimal solution. Numerical result shows that the proposed algorithm of the energy management system improves the fuel consumption significantly.
