A simultaneous optimum design of the structure and the actuators is demonstrated experimentally for a flat rib-stiffened shell antenna to verify the feasibility of the simultaneous optimum design for the high-precision space antenna. The 1/6 flat rib-stiffened shell antenna is treated, where the rotational symmetry of the antenna structure is assumed. As the results of the simultaneous optimization of the structure and the actuators for the flat rib-stiffened shell antenna, the higher precision surface is obtained by the simultaneous optimum design than the nominal design. To demonstrate the simultaneous optimum design, the antenna system is manufactured based on the optimum design. The experimental results indicate that the surface errors of the experiments are in agreement with that of the design optimization, and thus, the feasibility of the simultaneous optimum design is verified experimentally.
