Active magnetic bearings (AMB) are good candidates for Flywheel energy storage systems because of low friction loss. But conventional AMB use bias currents for linearizing control. These currents increase the power consumption. In order to reduce the power consumption, we used zero bias AMB attached permanent magnet (PM) on axial direction, and the power consumption using this system was reduced by 90% compared to bias AMB without PM. And when PM was attached on axial direction for gravity compensation, we compared control performance of the bias with zero bias by cost function. From the experimental result, it was found that the cost function of zero bias AMB was lower than that of bias AMB for no bias currents and it was better to use zero bias for PM attached AMB.
