Abstract
The performance of an amorphous liquid crystalline actuator has been experimentally evaluated. The amorphous liquid crystalline actuator is constituted with a substrate, on which an electrode pattern and a molecular orientation layer are treated, and a liquid crystalline droplet. When a voltage is imposed on the electrode, the liquid crystalline droplet will be driven due to the induction of the liquid crystalline back flow. Because of no casing on the droplet, the actuator can freely change its shape according to surrounding conditions. From the experimental results, the moved distance of the droplet during one pulse of applied voltage increase with the increase of the droplet size. Finally, it is found that the moved distance can be normalized with the initial distance between the gravity center of the droplet and the center of the paired electrodes.
