In blood flow through microvessels, red cells tend to approach the vessel centerline whereas platelets flow mainly in the vicinity of the vessel wall. This difference in blood cell distributions in the vessel cross-section results from the difference in migration properties due to the cell size and physical properties such as deformability. Recently, cell separation and particle focusing in microfluidic devices has been gaining considerable attention for the wide range of applications such as the cell sorting, cell detection and flow cytometry. In the present study, we consider the lateral migration properties of blood cells in microvessels and also the inertial migration and focusing of suspended particles in square channel flows from a fluid mechanical point of view.
