This study was focused on performance measurement of a newly developed submerged impulse turbine. Performance tests on the submerged/non-submerged runner were conducted to reveal loss mechanism of the submerged turbine. Estimated performance which is calculated from power loss magnitudes on a rotating disk and runner in a water tank was compared with the experimental result. The power loss on a rotating disk and on a runner in a water tank are generated by disk friction on the surface and by mixing of flow by runner blades. The results indicated that: (1) The turbine can be used in a water, its efficiency is, however, approximately half of that of non-submerged one. (2) The loss by disk friction and mixing is major reason for the performance drop, and water jet cavitation and casing wall has no influence on the performance.
