Abstract

In internal combustion engines, there is demand for the reduction of friction loss under poor lubricating conditions. Overlay technology is one of the effective means for reducing friction loss and improving seizure resistance of journal bearings. The present study describes the fundamental friction properties under poor lubricating condition of a polyamide-imide (PAI) overlay containing graphite powder. The overlays have been formed on the aluminum casting alloy (AC8A) surface with micro dimples by a high-speed spin coating. Friction behavior was evaluated by using a three-ball-on-disc type friction tester, and then the effect of the particle size of graphite on the coefficient of friction was investigated experimentally. As results, even if the particle size of graphite was different, there was no difference in the initial friction behavior. This is because that the graphite in the overlay hardly transferred to the mating metal surface.
