Abstract

Surface patterning is effective in improving lubricating properties. Most of the studies are performed to determine the lubricating properties using the combination of patterned and smooth surfaces. Lubricating properties are not clear for combinations of patterned surfaces. In this study, we investigated the lubricating properties for various combinations of nanostripe patterned surface. The nanostripe pattern was composed of ridge and groove array made of Ag and Cu. First, the nanostripe patterns were fabricated on thin silicon wafers and the patterned thin silicon wafers were glued to cylindrical surfaces. Then, cylindrical surfaces were set on a reciprocating friction tester as aligning each axis in an approximately right angle, and the reciprocating friction tests were performed. The effects of mutual alignment angle between nanostripe patterns were examined. The results showed that the highest coefficient of friction was measured when each nanostripe pattern was perpendicular to the sliding direction; the lowest coefficient was measured when each nanostripe pattern was parallel to the sliding direction.
